A Bad Week For Astronomers
[info]planetpluto has now been deleted and purged.

Boy, those astronomers really are hard core, aren't they? Stalwart men of science! Unflinching in the face of sentimental public opinion! Just like Galileo when he—

Huh? What?

Oh.

Yeah. Not surprised here. Considering that this pope used to run the Inquisition (no, really) I wondered whether some of the more progressive stances of the Church would be reversed, such as the fact that a kid going to a Catholic parish school in the US was actually MORE likely to be taught Darwin's theory of evolution with no interference from the parents than at a public or private school. The Vatican also previously expressed support for HP, said that the books in no way promoted witchcraft or devil-worship, and that they were deeply moral books.

Benedict has written against HP before his appointment and has now come out against evolution. Somehow he's missed the point that the Church needs to be moving forward, not backwards. The highly-qualified nuns that I know who would make excellent priests will clearly not get to serve anyone in that capacity unless they leave the Church, and the gay monks and priests I know will also either need to leave or stay in the closet. To say nothing of the extreme unlikelihood of the celibacy rule being made optional for clergy, even though there was never a solid theological reason for it and the Church only made that a rule in order to gain property and wealth for itself. I'm not expecting any changes concerning divorce or birth-control either, even though most US Catholics, in practice, do not pay any attention to Church teachings on these issues.

The Vatican also...said that...they were deeply moral books.

Heh. Well, I wouldn't go that far into the other direction, personally.

Hm... interesting. I'd like a better source than the Mail before knowing how to interpret it.

The Pope's opposition to HP seems like a whole lot of nothing when you look closely at it (because HP is, you know, important that stuff all got scrutinised), so I'm cautious.

Know-nothing-ism thrives. Did you see the kerfuffle about evolutionary biology conveniently disappearing from the list of grant-worthy majors at the Dept. of Education?

Subject 26.1399 would seem to cover it, though (there's no way to tell whether it has been added since the protests). And this might be a mistake rather than Bush Science at work, since "exercise psychology" was also off the list and why would he object to that? Unless its latest theory says that people who jog too much lose brain cells.
